Geschiedenis

De school is halverwege de jaren 90 geïnitieerd door wijlen Bisschop Felix Mkori, een geboren Malawiaan.

Zijn voorganger was bisschop Eugene Vroemen, een Limburger,die heel veel jaren in Malawi gewerkt heeft.

Deze had, in zijn bisdom, al enkele lagere scholen en een middelbare school voor jongens opgericht.

Mgr Mkori wilde het heel graag ook voor meisjes mogelijk maken om een middelbare opleiding te volgen.

Tegenover zijn huis in Chikwawa, de meest zuidelijke provincie van Malawi, lag een stuk braakliggende grond, dat hij gratis van de eigenaar kon krijgen om er een school te bouwen.

Zijn motto was “When you educate a woman, you educate the nation.”

Met behulp van vele inlandse acties en ook financiële steun vanuit Limburg en de euregio heeft hij deze school kunnen bouwen.

In 1995 startten de eerste leerlingen met hun opleiding.

Omdat de studentes uit heel Chikwawa komen en de infrastructuur terplekke het niet mogelijk maakt dagelijks verdere afstanden te reizen is de school als internaat opgezet.

De studentes wonen dus ook in hostels op het terrein van de school.

Vanaf het moment dat de bouw van de school klaar was, werden de giften hoofdzakelijk gebruikt om de schoolgelden of een gedeelte daarvan te betalen voor die meisjes, wier ouders het niet zelf konden betalen.

Hi,

My name is Christopher Moyo, born on June 4, 1977, a teacher at St. Lawrence Girls Secondary School. I am a family man, married to Mary. God has blessed us with three children, Ekari, 11, Luntha, 4, Michelle 1. My wife is a nurse midwife and at Chikwawa District Hospital.

I joined St. Lawrence Girls Secondary School on 1st July 2002. Which means I have been with the institution for 16 years. I joined at the time when the school had 4 teachers only. Quite a challenge. I came to teach English and Geography but to my surprise I was given English and advised to help the senior classes with Biology too. I was devastated. I took Biology with a pinch of salt. Good enough the students were cooperative and the result was so encouraging. I never taught Geography. Believing that a Biology teacher will come to bail me out of the pressure I was in, it never happened! And today, 16 years along the way, I am still stuck with Biology. No more English, no more Geography. Instead I was sent to train in a new subject, Life Skills. So currently I am teaching Biology in all classes and Life Skills in Form 4.

Sometimes teaching and learning materials are hard to come by. So teachers are left to use the little they can manage to get their hands on for the learning to continue. We are aware that it is the problem of funds. The school’s revenue is not enough to support all the needed materials. This funds problem also affects the salaries of teachers too. However, what we get keeps us going for the time being.

I was in the Major Seminary for my tertiary education. I studied Philosophy, Social Sciences, Theology and Communications. While working here, I have studied Information Technology up to Advanced Diploma. I intend to continue with the studies but I have to organize funds first.

As a teacher I have been given different responsibilities like: patron for Young Christian Students, patron for the Writers Club, Entertainment master, Sports master and in-charge of sanitation and library. Currently I am into Sports, Writers, and YCS.

I like working at St. Lawrence because I am free to express myself as a teacher with little or no pressure at all. I am always very angry when the students have not done well in National Exams. What makes me happy is to see a struggling student pass.

Leerlingen

OP dit moment (2019-2020) zitten er 153 leerlingen op St Lawrence, verdeeld over 4 jaargroepen. Malawi kent een centraal landelijk examen en het slagingspercentage hiervoor op St Lawrence is heel hoog: tussen 95 en 100%. Er zijn al meerdere jonge vrouwen hierna naar universiteiten gegaan.

Vakken

De vakken die op St Lawrence gegeven worden:

landbouwkunde, biologie, scheikunde, chichewa (nationale taal) , engels, aardrijkskunde, geschiedenis, wiskunde, lichamelijke opvoeding, sociale studies, levensbeschouwing en 'life skills'.

In de onderbouw kies je 10 vakken en in de bovenbouw 8.
